Description

St. Rita of Cascia
Patron saint of impossible causes, she is almost always depicted as she is here, with a spot of blood and a thorn deeply embedded in her forehead. As the story goes, in the year 1441, during a sermon on the crown of thorns, St. Rita prayed so intensely that a thorn broke loose from her crucifix and lodged in her forehead. Her wound became so offensive that she spent most of her life in total isolation.
