Plata Nativa

Wood carvings

Deeply rooted in popular art, the art of imagery has its roots in the Iberian tradition transferred to America during the 16th century. This art, which even today remains one of the most significant forms of popular devotion, is well represented in the Plata Nativa collection.

The tradition of imagery has its origins in Spain and is a sculptural art based on wood carving that includes a polychrome or stewed finish.

The technique had other variables, especially in its passage to America, where it merged with local traditions. There, images of complete carvings were common, but also images for clothing and serial production.

Colonial imagery had great variety, combining wood and other materials from the most humble such as cloth or maguey to the most valuable such as silver and other precious metals that were used to create crowns and halos.
